Heat has nowhere to go once the grille is crowded or dusty
A Sub-Zero pulls heat out of the cabinet and gives it off at the condenser, which depends on room air drawn through the grille. A remodel can cut that air off in two ways.
New trim, a thicker panel or an overlay larger than the installation guide allows can narrow the opening. Sub-Zero's 600-series installation guide warns that an oversized overlay grille panel may restrict air flow to the compressor area.

Four checks an owner can make without opening anything
Leave every panel where it is; these need your eyes and one hand, nothing else.
- Look at the grille from the front
Nothing should cross its slots: no new trim, no panel edge, nothing stored against it.
- Shine a flashlight through the slots
The fins you can see should look like bare metal. A gray felt of dust on them means the condenser needs cleaning.
- Hold a hand near the grille while it runs
While the compressor runs you should feel a gentle current of warm air. Hot, still air is worth mentioning when you call.
- Check the set points on the control panel
Classic-series units arrive set at 38°F and 0°F from the factory, and kitchen work puts many hands near the controls.

When to call
Call once the grille is clear and it still runs warm
If the grille is clear and the unit is still above its setting a day later, or the fins are dusty, the next step is a technician's. Cleaning the condenser properly, testing the condenser fan and reading the sealed system all happen behind panels.
